This small town is probably the largest outdoor museum on earth. There is so much to see, explore Luxor and you will be taken back by the sights.

Nile view from the Sheraton

This is where I go most years, all my friends say why do you go to the same place every year well we can't be wrong as we see the same old faces on the plane every time so there must be a pull of some kind. The view from any of the hotels across the Nile are so good.

Another Nile view from the Sheraton

The life here is just so laid back. After you have done all the trips you can just watch the boats go up and down the Nile and soak the sun up. I normally go in May now, but it is very hot 98 to 100 degrees at midnight, although this year it was a bit cooler only 89-94 degrees. (1999)

At the end of the day its the time to have a fuluca out. As the sun goes down it really is a sight to see, sadly this year there was hardly a good sunset, but that was due to the sand storms in the desert.

Places to go
Entrance to Luxor Temple

Luxor Temple.

Is always full of tourist's.

Inside luxor Temple

Karnak Temple

A little further out of town , but you can walk it easy (nearer to the Hilton) Don't miss the sound and light show.

Painted beams Karnak temple

The underside of these beams still have some of the original paint on them. Why doesn't ours last that long?.

 Oblisks in Karnak Temple

There are several obelisks standing or lying about in the temple.

Other Places to Go

  • Museum

If you want to see the Museum it is small and its best to do this trip yourself . It only costs about £6 (30le) to get in and if you have to have a taxi from your hotel that will only cost you about £1.50p each way at the most, depending what hotel you are at.

  • Banana Island

Not much to see here but a trip in a boat up the river makes a good afternoon. Again do this trip yourself , when we done this it cost about £5 for four of us. Only fruit trees etc. on the island so if you don't go there not much missed.

  • Crocodile Island

This is where the Movenpick hotel is. A trip you do yourself to pass an afternoon away, with a drink around their pool and perhaps have your evening meal there. There is a small zoo , if that s what you want to call it. Beware if you go by boat you have to pay £4 each to land on the Island.

  • Dendera

Trips to this place are organised by the Sheraton Hotel ,it consist of a trip down river, a look round the Temple and then back up the Nile with tea on the boat. Nice day out.

Shopping.

  • Market

Like all markets , most shops are full of tat. But,there are some good leather shops for coats and jackets etc. Again do not pay the price that they first ask for. Plenty of trinkets for gifts to give friends back home.

  • Gold

If its gold your after than you can get some good stuff here. I have spent days and I mean days checking out the best shops. After all my efforts I found that Yorkshire Bob near the Sheraton was the cheapest and when I have had it valued back home it is always worth about 4-5 times more than what I paid for it. Check him out.

Places to Stay

  • Luxor Hilton.

The name says it all a good Hotel but a bit to far away from the town center.

  • Sofitel Winter Palace.

This Hotel is right on the water front in the town center. Its an old Palace and they think its a bit upper class, my wife got barred for wearing shorts , what do they expect when its so hot so I really have not anything good to say about this place.

  • Jolie Ville Movenpick.

Based on Crocodile Island in a lovely setting. A bit far out of town but they run a boat to and from the town. First class and quite relaxing.

  • Sonesta St.George.

Only a few years old, this Hotel is really over powering. Its lavish design makes you feel like a millionaire. Good food , it was quiet the first year it opened but is getting busier now.

  • Luxor Sheraton.

This I think is the best in Luxor. I stay here every year,I have never had a complaint and nothing is to much for them. If all the other Hotels are so good why does everyone want to use the Sheraton's pool. We all have our special places and this is mine. It is out of the town but only about 5 minutes from some shops. It cost £1.50p for a taxi to the town or you can use the hotels bus service which is free.

  • Isis Luxor.

This hotel seems to be okay one year then the next year people complain about it. But I know people who would not stay anywhere else, but they do spend a lot of time at the Sheraton during the day.

Eating out

When I first went to Egypt most people on the advice from the tour operator had their meals in the hotels .Now it is different people eat out, as some of the local restaurant's are clean and dish up some good food. There are several restaurants that you can get a good meal from. In the town center look for

Amouns

Amouns is always full of tourists that will always tell you that it is okay to eat there.I have had lots of meals here and have never had any trouble afterwards.

Near the Sheraton there is Jems not a bad place but on the other side of the road is Maxime, this I find this very good, as when in Egypt I do like to eat some of the things I eat at home.

Double egg and chips, Bread, and tea cost about £2.50p. Steak and chips etc. cost about £5 per person a damn lot cheaper than eating in the Hotels but not such a good menu as I have said many times.
